Roadside Geology of Southern California (Roadside Geology Series) By Arthur G. Sylvester Paperback Roadside Geology of Southern California (Roadside Geology Series) Since Mountain Press started the Roadside Geology series forty years ago, southern Californians have been waiting for an RG of their own. During those four decadeswhich were punctuated by jarring earthquakes and landslidesgeologists continued to unravel the complexity of the Golden State, where some of the most dramatic and diverse geology in the world erupts, crashes, and collides. With dazzling color maps, diagrams, and photographs, Roadside Geology of Southern California takes advantage of this newfound knowledge, combining the latest science with accessible stories about the rocks and landscapes visible from winding two lane byways as well as from the regions vast network of highways.Join Arthur Sylvester, an award winning UC Santa Barbara geologist, and Elizabeth OBlack Gans, a geologist illustrator, as they motor through mountains and deserts to explore the iconic features of the SoCal landscape, from boulder piles in Joshua Tree National Park and brilliant white dunes in the Channel Islands to tar seeps along the rugged coast and youthful cinder cones in the Mojave Desert. Whether you want to find precious gemstones, ponder the mysteries of the Salton Sea, or straddle the boundary between the North American and Pacific Plates, be sure to bring this book along as your tour guide.

There is a pretty good intro that covers basic geology concepts relevant to the book Highly recommended to anyone who looks at a landscape and see natural history and not just a pile of rocks Roadside Geology of Southern California Roadside Geology Series Picking up a reference copy Never thought I would look forward to my next LA traffic jam as an opportunity to admire the geology and ponder all the fault lines flanking my mother in law s house in the transverse range Planning to supplement with Rough Hewn Land because I m a newbie in this space and wanted something structured chronologically in layman s terms for the whole book rather than just the intro chapter Roadside Geology of Southern California Roadside Geology Series Fantastic.

Very good general reference for anyone living in Southern California Roadside Geology of Southern California Roadside Geology Series I bought a copy of this book at the Anza Borrego Desert State Park Initially I thought this book would cover of the beaten path roads such as the 4x4 road within the park It does not The focus is on road that are heavily traveled and usually at high speeds This was a disappointment but I should have looked closely before buying it since they dispel that preconception in the first few pages of the introduction What a book The photographs maps and other media are fantastic and mostly in full color They are also plentiful and highly relevant to the text The text itself is well with and appropriately academic While the book could be enjoyed by someone with no geology knowledge it might get a bit tough to comprehend That being said if you like knowing how current geology came to be Roadside Geology of Southern California Roadside Geology Series This is a great book about the 5 geological provinces of SoCal Mojave Salton Trough Peninsular Ranges LA Basin and Transverse Ranges with a bonus section at the very end about the Channel Islands A note the book is true to its title For example as you cannot drive to the Channel Islands they do not have any geological maps in the book as they are not roadside More broadly while there are occasional snippets explaining the historical or structural features of the region these are relatively brief I personally would ve preferred maybe another 30 pages tying everything together in detail If you want to go in depth you may want a generalized California Geology book to supplement That being said it is VERY good at what it does The book covers all the major freeways of SoCal and explains the geological sites both drive by views and extended stopping hiking points The cross sections are magnificent everything is clearly labelled there are faults and anticlines unconformities are marked The stratigraphic sections are also excellent and even correlate related units across the region which is very helpful in piecing together the regional geology The maps are naturally the most detailed and packed figures and yet they are generally very well designed and well drawn My only nitpick is that some of the unit colors are similar I wish just a few units were distinguished by hatching or other patterning as well as color because it took me a few moments to distinguish some by color alone Yet even with that it was possible to tell them apart with training and the book uses the same standard colors throughout so you ll get used to it soon enough All three figure types cross section map and stratigraphy are beautiful detailed and useful for lookin up further information. Roadside Geology of Southern California bookworm And on that topic the back of the book includes a glossary an excellent bibliography with books and articles for each section AND a list of natural history museums for each of the regions This is incredibly valuable for anybody who wants to dive deeper into the geology and take their rock admiring to the next step If you are driving down one of these roads this would be a fantastic book to bring along It will describe all the major sites for you to pay attention to as you go down the way and can help you make sense of the beautiful chaotic mess that is the Golden State This is an excellent book series and as always they deliver with a solid I take this book with me when I go to SoCal and it always helps me notice a new gem Roadside Geology of Southern California Roadside Geology Series
