Harris a murderous bandit leader follows a dark path seeking to overcome an evil from time immemorial that has reduced the world into a wild frontier It s The Searchers meets The Dark Tower in this post apocalyptic fantasy Ledge Town is a short story of about 5100 words Ledge Town A Wyrd WesternLedge Town: A Wyrd WesternGreat short with a nice Outlaw twistAnspach has admittedly put together an introductory piece with Ledge Town While it is definitely a short it is a gritty piece of writing with the seasoning of an old dusty western Throw in some unexpected futuristic elements a strange key character who may or may not have access to the gifts of darkness and Anspach has you wanting much Really enjoyed the read Kindle Edition The only complaint I have about this dark and gritty piece of weird west fiction is that it s over too quickly but even that s not a legitimate gripe since it concludes at just the right time when the characters demonstrate who they are and what moves them in the most graphic way possible. Fantasy Ledge town In a post apocalyptic world sometimes mercy and doing the right and only thing is terrifying and the burden of saving the world might fall on those who have the strength to undertake such tasks. Rockledge townhomes The story opens with a pair of bandits riding through a wasteland but one of them is a killer with a purpose finding a way out of this ruined reality and to another Their goal Ledge Town The reader is given just enough detail in terms of description and characterization to explain what s going on through their travels and through a tense action sequence that is both shocking and appropriate as well as inevitable whetting the appetite for further adventure Kindle Edition Since Jason Anspach s short story Ledge Town is at least in part a Western it s fitting to introduce this review with a quote from the classic Once Upon a Time in the West In the opening scene three gunman confront Charles Bronson who asks them if they brought a horse for him When the leader says they re one horse shy Bronson shakes his head and replies You brought two too many Similarly Anspach tries to blend the classic Western post Apocalyptic science fiction and supernatural horror in Ledge Town and the result is two genres too many. Ledge townview high The story takes place 500 years after some great cataclysm devastated most of the United States leaving much of the West a desert inhabited in part by outlaw gangs One such gang is down to its last two members Bart and Harris Bart is an ordinary albeit vicious outlaw but Harris is a different type because he knows about what really happened centuries earlier and where the remnants of the former civilization are buried That knowledge comes courtesy of a stranger who just might be the Devil and who imparted that wisdom to Harris No matter how much wisdom Harris may have he still has to eat and with that in mind he and Bart confront a pioneering couple trying to eke out a living as farmers They manage to wangle a dinner invitation from the couple during which tensions and suspense rise. Ledger town Imagining the post Apocalyptic world as a Western frontier isn t that farfetched an idea the Mad Max stories are or less Westerns especially since Ledge Town is set in Oregon In fact the parts of the story that most closely resemble a traditional Western work quite well Anspach s descriptions of the settings are quite vivid and when gunfighters and pioneers sit down to their last supper the author is able to ratchet up the suspense quite well Readers know something drastic is going to happen they just don t know what. Ledge townopolis Unfortunately even after the big showdown occurs readers still won t know exactly what happened because the author s attempts to blend in the supernatural wind up unwittingly confusing than edifying I can t really explain without spoiling the ending but it s never really made clear just why Harris has gotten his inside info about the state of the world and what his long term goal is Indeed the nature of the cataclysmic events that destroyed much of the world is never really made clear and whether their origins are natural or supernatural I realize that the author probably intended his method of storytelling to tantalize and intrigue readers but there s a thin line between creating a sense of mystery and simply being confusing and Ledge Town errs on the side of confusion Ledge Town is only about 20 pages long and its setting is also the setting for some of Anspach s longer works Presumably some of the mysteries raised in this story are answered in the author s other works and Ledge Town might have been very effective as a novelette at two or three times its present length At it present length however it s almost equal amounts intriguing and bewildering with the meaning of the story s title one of the most confounding things of all Ledge Town is still worth reading as a mood piece for the parts that are effective but its attempts to serve as a springboard into a epic work will leave readers out on a ledge Kindle Edition This was an awesome glimpse into the Apocalypse Wyrd Universe. Ledge town science fiction series This short story wet my appetite and I m hungry for Kindle Edition The Wyrd series is a rare joy I have read several of the Genre and not had a bad one yet The Wyrd world has been created by a co operative of authors and each has their take on this common concept The collaboration was a breath of fresh air written to a broad set of rules as authors write about historical issues we are all aware of in the Wyrd world the authors write with an alternative history It s a great hook. Granite ledge townhomes This is a well written short story it is a western based in the post apocalyptic Wyrd universe There is no filler but the character is developed and even in the short space of time you know him you can warm to him. Book shelf town I have been most impressed with Jason Anspach from his collaborations with Nick Cole at the Galaxy s Edge to his solo work dealing with ghosts that don t want to depart in the til Death series Anspach is an author I very much enjoy reading Kindle Edition.
