I ve been reading quite a few local history local town type books and for the genre this is one of the better ones I ve read It s written in an easy going chatty kind of style and doesn t get too bogged down with masses of details which makes for a pleasant read and would be worth a look pre a visit to get ideas on what to do I ve been to Whitby countless times and to the museum yet I don t remember the Hand of Glory they mention so I may have to plan another visit sometime how did I miss that The book covers the history going back to ye olde times and St Hilda can t really miss her out in a guide the coast jet jewellery the whaling history fishermen the world wars including quite a lengthy section on the Rohilla disaster and then a section on famous notable people including the old religious folk the naval and whaling folk and famous writers who have visited I get that any book can t exhaustively include EVERYTHING but given the number of writers mentioned who visited Whitby it was a popular resort in the 1800s including oh Charles Dickins had lunch there once it seems a little shoddy that Mary Linskill born lived died wrote in and about Whitby doesn t even get a sentance in this book. Book about whitby Obivously this is strictly for the tourist and covers history and tourism but there s nothing about contemporary life for normal folk in Whitby although I don t think you d expect such a thing in a book like this Ian Thompson
