Megillat HaY'shuahThe Salvation Scroll of the Yemenite Jews By Marc Michaels
The rating is not so much on the text itself as it is an interesting short story to read but so on the way it is organized and how very uninteresting it is other than the text itself A few typos too Overall grateful for the ability to read this in English but I wished effort was put into it to make it a impressive experience Megillat HaY shuahThe Salvation Scroll of the Yemenite Jews This work is an English translation of a 20th century Teimani Yemenite Jewish work the Yemenite Salvation Scroll for a time customarily read on Chol haMoed Sukkot It echoes the themes of Megillat Esther but with a different cast of characters In place of the wicked Haman is a modern villain i. e an equally wicked 20th century Grand Mufti known to history for his appeal to Imam King Yachya of Yemen the Achashverosh figure on behalf of Hitler seeking permission to wipe out all the Jews of Yemen The hero of this scroll is Rav Shalom ben Sa adyah Gamli el 1907 2001 through whom the Temani community was spared the destruction which was sought against them It is a short reading but one which provides a modern parallel to the events of the Book of Esther a beautiful complement to the traditional reading of Megillat Esther especially for those of Teimani heritage My profound gratitude goes out to Marc Michaels for opening this work up to the English speaking audience Megillat HaY shuahThe Salvation Scroll of the Yemenite Jews
