PDF Joss Whedon's fraymakers If you took the premise of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and set it in the world of The Fifth Element you d have Fray It s a very clever extension of the Buffy franchise brought to us by the writer who originally created it for the movies then re envisioned it as a groundbreaking TV series Further the comic book format allowed for Joss Whedon to go where his unrestrained imagination took him rather than being beholden to budgetary limitations and production logistics consequently the creatures set pieces and futuristic production design are really spectacular wonderfully rendered by Karl Moline and Andy Owens with just the right degree of magic realism. Joss whedon's fraya after And like the Buffy feature Fray isn t really about anything other than a super hero s journey an average utterly underestimated girl learns she has a special destiny Buffy s storytelling peaked during the second and third seasons of the television series after it dispensed with all the narrative setup when it served as a powerful allegory for the adolescent experience enduring the hell of high school losing your virginity etc That s when its central metaphor was firing on all cylinders the show struggled in later seasons when the characters were no longer high school students and their monstrous encounters were or less stripped of their subtextual resonance With that in mind What is Fray ultimately about and what does it have to say about those thematics I would argue not much Conceptually it s a very clever sci fi horror hybrid Melaka Fray is equal parts Buffy Summers and Rick Deckard but the story itself doesn t operate as an allegory for a relatable human or emotional experience it s just Buffy set in the future And to be sure Fray is extremely entertaining with sharp dialogue some surprising plot twists and a heroine cut from the same cloth as Buffy Faith and Cordelia a take no s t badass as quick with a snappy comeback as she is with a stake through the heart who nonetheless conceals layers of depth and pain beneath the surface.
