An absolutely stellar collection of poems from a genius but troubled poet John Wieners is quickly becoming my favorite all time modern poet To my mind he is as good if not better than Jack Micheline and Bob Kaufman two of the very best beat poets Jack Spicer and Robert Duncan San Francisco Renaissance poets and other contemporary heavyweights such as Lew Welch and Stephen Jonas who was also from Boston like Wieners himself. Selected Poems epublishing This collection released sometime in the 1970s showcases some of Wieners brilliant work up until that point that had been previously released in either The Hotel Wentley Poems an indelible debut as a Wieners scholar once put it The Ace of Pentacles a vastly underrated brilliant follow up second book by the author Asylum Poems written while he was away at a funny farm on Long Island and Nerves As I know I am going to receive a copy of Behind the State Capitol Or the Cincinnati Pike for Christmas I decided to read this book now as it was just released prior to that iconoclastic book which bewildered not only the average poetry reader but the average John Wieners reader and thereafter divided his fans into the serious John Wieners fans and those who liked his old stuff including Robert Duncan himself Since this book was published back in the 1970s there have been two other selected poems books released the first one released in the mid 80s by the legendary Black Sparrow Press and edited by Raymond Foye This selected poems should really be called a new and selected poems as it features sequences of poems not found anywhere else The most recent selected poems I know little of its contents but suspect it gives the reader a generous overall sweep of his oeuvre up to his death in 2002 and beyond as there have been quite a few stunning posthumous Wieners releases including A New Book From Rome and The Book of Prophecies which I am saving for a rainy day next summer vacation while watching the streetcars go by out front an actual dream I had of reading this book This is an excellent introduction to Wieners poetry and can be read in a day or two For a comprehensive selected poems get the one that Raymond Foye edited and the book that John Martin over at the now defunct Black Sparrow Press was wise and prescient enough to put out What a poet He was so eccentric but just read a few of these poems and you ll be blown away by the precision of the rhythm inherent in each line It s breathtaking how good he is and reminds you of the tight lines found in John Keats poetry who was a big influence on Wieners Highly highly recommended I might start carrying this volume around with me in my pocket from now on Selected Poems
